Justin Timberlake is currently engaged in a legal dispute to prevent the release of police body camera footage from his impaired driving arrest in the Hamptons in June 2024. The footage, which reportedly spans approximately eight hours, includes Timberlake's initial traffic stop, police questioning, and field sobriety tests.
Timberlake's attorneys filed a lawsuit against the village of Sag Harbor and its police department, asserting that the release of this footage would significantly infringe upon his privacy by exposing "intimate, highly personal and sensitive details." They argue that such a release would also damage Timberlake's reputation, potentially leading to public ridicule and harassment.
The legal proceedings follow Timberlake's guilty plea to impaired driving in September 2024, stemming from an incident in which he ran a stop sign and exhibited signs of intoxication, according to police reports. During the arrest, Timberlake admitted to having consumed one martini and claimed he was following friends home. As part of the plea agreement, he was sentenced to a $500 fine, community service, and a 90-day license suspension, along with an agreement to participate in a public safety announcement against drunk driving.
Currently, the court has not issued a ruling on the lawsuit. A judge has asked both parties to discuss potential resolutions before a follow-up report is due later this week. Meanwhile, Sag Harbor officials have stated their intent to comply with public records laws, which generally mandate the disclosure of police body camera footage, while also ensuring that the release does not compromise public safety.
