The latest entry in the "Jurassic World" franchise, titled "Jurassic World Rebirth," has emerged as a significant box office success, generating $318.3 million globally during its opening five days over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Directed by Gareth Edwards and featuring a cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, the film earned $147.3 million domestically, with $91.5 million attributed to the traditional three-day weekend.
Internationally, "Rebirth" opened in 82 markets, including China, where it alone contributed $41.5 million to the overall total, marking the largest opening for a Motion Picture Association film in the country this year. Despite achieving strong box office numbers, the film has received mixed reviews, holding a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B CinemaScore from audiences.
Comparisons with previous installments in the franchise are complicated by factors such as inflation and changes in moviegoing behavior post-COVID. The original "Jurassic World" debuted in 2015 with a domestic opening of $208 million, while its sequels, "Fallen Kingdom" and "Dominion," opened at $148 million and $145 million, respectively.
"Jurassic World Rebirth," which reportedly cost $180 million to produce, incorporates a storyline centered on a hunt for dinosaur DNA to cure heart disease, rather than for creating new dinosaurs. The film's marketing campaign was extensive, featuring a global press tour and various brand partnerships.
In other box office news, the previous weekend's leader, "F1," dropped to second place with $26.1 million, while Universal's "How to Train Your Dragon" and Disney's "Elio" secured third and fourth places, respectively.
