Sean "Diddy" Combs is currently serving a sentence of over four years in a federal prison after being convicted on prostitution-related charges. Following his sentencing, U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian has indicated that he will recommend Combs for participation in the Federal Bureau of Prisons' Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP), which could potentially allow him to reduce his sentence by up to a year.
Combs has been incarcerated at a Brooklyn federal facility since his indictment in September 2024. His legal team has requested that he be transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution at Fort Dix in New Jersey, a low-security facility known to offer the RDAP. While the judge has stated he will recommend Combs be placed as close as possible to the New York metropolitan area and considered for any available substance abuse programs, the final decision rests with the Bureau of Prisons (BOP).
The RDAP is a nine-month treatment program aimed at inmates struggling with substance abuse, which Combs has publicly acknowledged as an issue in his life. In a recent letter to the judge, Combs expressed that his time in custody has prompted him to confront his addiction and that he has achieved sobriety for the first time in 25 years.
Although Judge Subramanian acknowledged the seriousness of Combs' offenses during the sentencing, he also offered words of encouragement, suggesting that Combs has the potential to overcome his challenges. It remains to be seen how the BOP will assess Combs' eligibility for early release, as their discretion can be influenced by various factors, including the nature of the crimes for which he was convicted.
