Judge dismisses Trump's $15 billion suit against NY Times, permits refiling

On September 18, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce an agreement with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during a state visit at Chequers. Meanwhile, in a separate legal matter, a federal judge in Tampa, Florida, has dismissed Trump's $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times. Judge Steven Merryday deemed the lawsuit "decidedly improper and impermissible," citing its excessive length and unnecessary content.

The judge criticized the 85-page complaint for being overly focused on praise for Trump and for including numerous allegations that he described as superfluous. Merryday emphasized that a legal complaint should not serve as a platform for personal grievances or political rhetoric, likening it to a public forum or a political rally. He has granted Trump and his legal team 28 days to submit a revised complaint, limiting it to 40 pages.

In the original lawsuit, Trump accused The New York Times of acting as a "mouthpiece" for the Democratic Party and named four of its reporters, as well as Penguin Random House, which published a book critical of him titled "Lucky Loser." Trump's legal team intends to proceed with the lawsuit while adhering to the judge's directive regarding the length and content of the revised filing. A spokesperson for The Times welcomed the judge's ruling, asserting that it recognized the complaint's lack of legal substance and its political nature.

This ongoing legal battle highlights the complexities of defamation law and the challenges public figures face when engaging with media entities.
