The U.S. Coast Guard has initiated an investigation into the death of Todd Meadows, a deckhand from the reality television series "Deadliest Catch." Meadows, who joined the show last year but had not yet appeared in an episode, fell overboard during a fishing trip on February 25, 2026, near Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The Coast Guard confirmed the details in a statement, indicating that they are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, which is part of their role in addressing marine accidents and enhancing safety standards.
According to the Coast Guard, the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady reported that Meadows fell overboard approximately 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor. He was recovered by the crew about ten minutes later but was unresponsive. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he could not be revived, and the crew transported him back to Dutch Harbor.
Meadows was 25 years old and is survived by his wife and three children. Following his death, Captain Rick Shelford of the Aleutian Lady expressed his condolences on social media, describing the incident as a tragic loss for the crew. Shelford highlighted Meadows' strong work ethic and the impact of his presence on board.
In light of the tragedy, Meadows' family has established a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and support for his family, which has raised over $38,000 toward a goal of $45,000.
"Deadliest Catch," which airs on the Discovery Channel, has a history of depicting the hazardous conditions faced by crab fishermen, and several individuals associated with the show have passed away since its inception in 2005.
