Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt sue Los Angeles over home lost in fires

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, known for their appearances on the reality television show "The Hills," have initiated a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles following the loss of their home in the recent Pacific Palisades wildfires. Filed on Tuesday, the lawsuit is part of a larger legal action involving over 20 other affected property owners and residents.

The complaint specifically targets the city and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, alleging that inadequate water supply and pressure impeded firefighting efforts, contributing to the destruction of their properties. The lawsuit points to the Santa Ynez Reservoir, which has been offline since February 2024 for repairs, as a critical factor in the water issues experienced during the fires.

The Eaton and Palisades fires, intensified by strong winds during a notably dry season, have resulted in significant devastation, with 28 reported fatalities and over 12,000 structures destroyed, marking them as among the most destructive wildfires in California history. The situation has drawn attention to the performance of local water infrastructure, particularly as hydrants ran dry and water tanks were depleted within hours during the emergency.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for an independent investigation into the water utility’s operations amid rising scrutiny. The plaintiffs argue that the failures of the city's water system were a key element leading to the losses they incurred. They invoke the legal principle of "inverse condemnation," which holds utilities accountable for damages caused by their operations. The city and water utility have yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit.
