At the Google I/O developer conference, CEO Sundar Pichai introduced several new artificial intelligence tools, highlighting the company's continued investment in generative AI technologies. Among the announcements was Veo 3, an AI video generator designed to create videos that can incorporate both audio and visuals. This tool stands out for its capacity to integrate character dialogue and animal sounds, differentiating it from similar offerings like OpenAI's Sora.
Eli Collins, Vice President of Product at Google DeepMind, emphasized Veo 3's capabilities, noting its proficiency in text and image prompting, as well as its ability to accurately synchronize lip movements with audio. The tool is now available to U.S. subscribers of Google's Ultra subscription plan, priced at $249.99 per month, and to users of the Google Vertex AI enterprise platform.
In addition to Veo 3, Google announced Imagen 4, an upgraded image-generation tool that delivers enhanced image quality based on user prompts. Another new offering is Flow, a filmmaking tool that allows users to create cinematic content by specifying locations, shots, and stylistic preferences. Access to Flow is provided through platforms such as Gemini, Whisk, Vertex AI, and Workspace.
These updates occur within a broader context where generative AI for imagery and video is gaining traction. However, Google’s previous efforts in this area have faced challenges; notably, the relaunch of Imagen 3 last year followed criticism for generating historically inaccurate results. The company aims to address these issues as it continues to enhance its AI capabilities with tools like Veo 2, which allows users to manipulate video content through text prompts, and the opening of its Lyria 2 music-generation model on YouTube Shorts.
