British pop star Dua Lipa has initiated legal proceedings against Samsung Electronics, seeking damages of at least $15 million. The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, accuses the South Korean tech company of using her image without authorization in its marketing efforts for television sets.
According to the complaint, Samsung allegedly featured a copyrighted image of Lipa, titled “Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” on the packaging of its televisions. The lawsuit claims that this use of her image created the impression that Lipa endorsed the products, thereby benefiting Samsung commercially.
Lipa’s legal team contends that the unauthorized use infringes on her copyright and trademark rights, as well as violating her publicity rights. The lawsuit includes evidence in the form of screenshots from social media, where fans expressed a willingness to purchase the television simply because of Lipa’s image on the packaging.
The pop star reportedly became aware of the alleged infringement in June of the previous year and requested that Samsung cease using her image. However, her lawyers assert that Samsung did not comply with this request. They argue that the unauthorized use of Lipa’s likeness has harmed her brand identity and commercial reputation by misleading the public into believing she endorses the television products.
Samsung has refrained from providing comments regarding the pending litigation. Meanwhile, Lipa's legal representatives have not yet responded to requests for further comment on the matter. The case highlights ongoing discussions around intellectual property rights and the commercialization of celebrity images in advertising.
