Disney's 'Zootopia 2' expected to reach $1 billion at the box office

Disney's "Zootopia 2" has achieved significant box office success, projected to surpass $1 billion globally. This animated sequel features characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, who are on the trail of a mysterious reptile causing turmoil in the mammal metropolis of Zootopia. As of the latest estimates, the film has grossed $232.7 million in the U.S. and $753.4 million internationally.

The film's success marks Disney's second billion-dollar release of 2025, alongside the live-action remake of "Lilo & Stitch." Jared Bush, chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, commented on the milestone, emphasizing the importance of shared cinematic experiences for audiences worldwide.

"Zootopia 2" stands out in the context of global box office trends, particularly in China, where it has generated nearly $450 million. The film recorded the highest animated opening for a non-local title in China and set a record for the highest-grossing non-local animated film within five days of its release.

The performance of "Zootopia 2" reflects a broader shift in the domestic theatrical landscape, where PG-rated family films have outperformed PG-13 and R-rated films in 2025. PG-rated films have collectively earned $2.7 billion in the U.S. and Canada, surpassing the $2.5 billion for PG-13 films and $2.4 billion for R-rated films. This trend, which began in 2024 when PG-rated films first sold more tickets than other ratings, indicates a growing influence of younger audiences in box office decision-making.

As the industry adapts to these trends, the success of "Zootopia 2" showcases the enduring appeal of family-oriented cinema in a changing market.
