'Deadpool' and 'Alien' top charts, 'Blink Twice' has quiet opening

In a weekend marked by the dominance of holdovers at the box office, newcomers struggled to make an impact. "Deadpool & Wolverine" reclaimed the top spot with $18.3 million in its fifth weekend, pushing its international earnings over $1.2 billion. The Walt Disney Co. continued its success with "Alien: Romulus" in second place and "Inside Out 2" in the top 10 for the 11th consecutive weekend, bringing in $16.2 million and $2.1 million respectively.

Romantic drama "It Ends With Us" held onto third place for the second week in a row with $11.9 million, while the new release "Blink Twice" starring Zoe Kravitz and Channing Tatum opened modestly in fourth place with $7.3 million. "The Forge," a faith-based coming-of-age film, rounded out the top five with $6.6 million and received an A+ CinemaScore from audiences.

Despite positive audience reception, "The Crow" struggled with a $4.6 million opening, while long-running films like "Twisters" and "Coraline" continued to outperform newer releases. Lionsgate's "Borderlands" also underperformed in August, making only $15.2 million compared to its reported $120 million budget.

Overall, the weekend was characterized by a crowded movie marketplace that favored familiar titles over new releases. Analysts like Paul Dergarabedian predict that the upcoming Labor Day holiday may provide a boost to newer films as word-of-mouth spreads and more audiences head to theaters.

In the end, the box office results reflect a mix of success and challenges for both established and new films, with some finding their footing while others struggle to break through in a competitive landscape.
