Snoop Dogg attended the Artistic Gymnastics Women's Qualification on July 28, 2024, during the second day of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games at Bercy Arena. Concurrently, Comcast and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced a significant new agreement that extends Comcast's media rights for the Olympic Games through 2036.
According to a press release from the IOC, the deal is valued at approximately $3 billion and elevates Comcast from a mere media rights holder to a strategic partner. This partnership will involve collaboration on various aspects, including broadcast infrastructure, in-venue distribution, and U.S. digital advertising. IOC President Thomas Bach emphasized the innovative nature of this agreement, noting its departure from traditional media rights contracts in recognition of the rapidly evolving media landscape.
Previously, Comcast's rights agreement was set to expire after the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Australia. The new arrangement enables Comcast to broadcast the upcoming 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the 2036 Summer Olympics in a city yet to be determined. Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts commented on the transformative impact of technology on the media industry, asserting that the partnership recognizes and anticipates ongoing changes.
This development aligns with Comcast and NBCUniversal's strategy to leverage live sports to enhance subscriptions for their streaming service, Peacock. The company recently reported successful viewership during the Summer Olympics in Paris, with over 30 million viewers across NBC’s platforms and record advertising revenue of $1.2 billion. This growing emphasis on digital coverage reflects the broader trend of integrating live sports into streaming services.
