Christopher Nolan is adapting The Odyssey for IMAX in his next film

Christopher Nolan, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer, is set to tackle another epic project: an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. Universal Pictures announced on Monday that the film is scheduled to open in theaters on July 17, 2026.

The details of the upcoming film are still shrouded in mystery, but the studio has teased that it will be a "mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX technology." This will mark the first time that an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek saga will be shown on IMAX film screens.

Nolan, known for his affinity for IMAX technology dating back to The Dark Knight, has exclusively used large format film and high-resolution cameras for his last three films. For Oppenheimer, he even had the first black-and-white IMAX film stock developed.

While Nolan has not revealed specifics about the new technology for The Odyssey, he praised IMAX's engineering staff for their innovative work in preparing for the production. Despite the advancements in digital filmmaking, Nolan expressed his appreciation for the continued innovation in celluloid film technology.

The Odyssey will be Nolan's second collaboration with Universal Pictures following the success of Oppenheimer, which grossed nearly $1 billion at the box office and earned the filmmaker his first Oscars for best director and best picture.

Although there have been numerous rumors swirling around the plot and casting of The Odyssey, no official confirmations have been made by the studio. As fans eagerly anticipate Nolan's next cinematic venture, the anticipation continues to build for what promises to be another visually stunning and epic film experience.
