Celine Dion returned to full-length concert performance Saturday at the Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, France, completing a 25-song, two-hour-and-15-minute show before about 30,000 fans. It was her first complete concert since March 8, 2020, and a significant test of her ability to perform after being diagnosed with stiff person syndrome in 2022. The sold-out event began a demanding concert residency.
The rare neurological disorder causes muscle stiffness and severe spasms, and it can affect the throat and larynx. Dion previously said singing with the condition could feel like being strangled. After canceling her world tour, she made a brief return at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in July 2024, but performed only one song there before an international television audience.
In Nanterre, Dion acknowledged her health directly, telling the audience in French that she was doing well. She became emotional during the opening portion of the show and briefly missed a cue, but continued performing for another two hours. Her set included “My Heart Will Go On,” “The Power of Love” and the operatic aria “Ebben? Ne andrò lontana” live.
The performance suggested changes in Dion’s voice, particularly in its upper range, while showing her willingness to attempt demanding notes. During the encore, she held the high note in “All By Myself,” then reacted with visible relief as the orchestra reentered. Audience members described the moment as confirmation that she could again sustain a major concert performance under intense scrutiny.
The concert launched a schedule of 16 shows over five weeks, with 10 additional dates planned for May 2027. Across 26 performances, Dion will face the challenge of repeating the physical and vocal effort. The opening night established that she could complete one full show; the remaining dates will indicate whether that return can be maintained consistently throughout the engagement.
