'Captain America' drops in second weekend; 'The Monkey' boosts Neon's success

"Captain America: Brave New World" had a strong debut at the box office, earning $100 million over the four-day opening weekend. However, the film experienced a significant decline in its second weekend, bringing in $28.2 million and marking a steep 68% drop in ticket sales. This decline is notable within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as only two previous films have seen larger decreases in their second weekends: "The Marvels" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania."

Despite the critical backlash and a mediocre "B-" CinemaScore from audiences, "Brave New World" has achieved a global gross of $289.4 million, with international sales nearing $150 million. The film's performance reflects ongoing challenges faced by the MCU to regain the box office dominance it enjoyed prior to "Avengers: Endgame."

In contrast, the weekend's other major release, "The Monkey," directed by Oz Perkins, opened with $14.2 million. The film, adapted from a Stephen King short story, received a positive 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although audiences rated it lower with a C+ CinemaScore. Neon's marketing strategy for "The Monkey" included unconventional promotional events, such as a funeral premiere.

Other films in the box office rankings included "Paddington in Peru," which earned $6.5 million, and the animated film "Ne Zha 2," which brought in $3.1 million. The latter has achieved remarkable success in China, becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever, surpassing "Inside Out 2."

As the box office landscape evolves, "Brave New World" and "The Monkey" illustrate the varying fortunes of franchises and independent films in a competitive market.
