Captain America: Brave New World hits $100 million holiday weekend

"Captain America: Brave New World" debuted with strong initial ticket sales, grossing approximately $88.5 million over its opening weekend in North America, as reported by studio estimates. This makes it the largest opening of 2025 thus far, with projections indicating it may surpass $100 million domestically and reach around $192.4 million globally by the end of the Presidents' Day holiday weekend.

This film marks a significant shift in the "Captain America" franchise, with Anthony Mackie taking over the titular role from Chris Evans. Notably, Harrison Ford co-stars as the U.S. President, who is transformed into the Red Hulk. Despite the film's commercial success, it received mixed critical reviews, currently holding a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This places it among the lower-rated entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although audiences responded more favorably, giving it an 80% verified score.

"Brave New World" was released in 4,105 theaters across the U.S. and Canada, and it follows a single Marvel release in 2024, positioning it as the first of three major upcoming releases in 2025. The production budget for the film was reported at $180 million, excluding marketing costs.

In the broader box office landscape, the second place went to "Paddington in Peru," which earned an estimated $13 million. Other notable releases included the horror film "Heart Eyes," which generated $10 million, and the animated feature "Dog Man," which brought in $9.7 million. Overall, the North American box office saw a 20% increase compared to the previous year. Final domestic figures will be published later this week.
