"Avatar" sequel continues to top box office

James Cameron's long-awaited sequel to "Avatar," "Avatar: The Way of Water," continues to reign at the box office. According to Comscore, the film made an estimated $63 million over the holiday weekend and has now earned more than $400 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion globally. It has become the 15th highest global release ever, just behind the first "Black Panther" movie.

The runner-up film for the weekend was Universal's "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," which earned an estimated $16 million, followed by Disney's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" with around $4.8 million. Sony's biopic "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody" made $4.2 million in its second week of release, and Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie's Paramount film "Babylon" earned just $2.7 million in its second week, averaging $815 per location. However, "Avatar" averaged $15,000 per location.

The top 10 estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore, included "Avatar: The Way of Water" in the first place, followed by "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “Babylon,” "Violent Night," “The Whale,” “The Fabelmans,” “The Menu,” and “Strange World.” Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
