An autopsy report has revealed that the primary cause of actor Gene Hackman's death was heart disease, as confirmed by the findings of medical investigators. The report indicates that the 95-year-old actor was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease and likely had not eaten for an extended period prior to his death.
The examination highlighted Hackman's poor cardiovascular health, noting he had a history of congestive heart failure, underwent an aortic valve replacement, and had an irregular heartbeat. He had also been fitted with a pacemaker in April 2019. Additionally, the report indicated that Hackman's carbon monoxide levels were within the normal range and that he tested negative for hantavirus, a rare disease associated with rodent droppings.
Hackman's wife, Betsy Arakawa, reportedly died at home from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, though her autopsy report has not yet been released. It is believed that Hackman may have survived his wife by approximately one week, potentially unaware of her passing. His pacemaker exhibited an abnormal heart rhythm on February 18, which is thought to be the day of his death, as noted by the state's chief medical examiner.
A toxicology report indicated that Hackman had no alcohol or intoxicating drugs in his system but did show a low level of acetone, suggesting prolonged fasting. Prior to their deaths, records indicated that Arakawa had been searching for information regarding flu-like symptoms and breathing techniques. Investigators have conducted interviews and searches at the couple's home as part of the ongoing inquiry into their deaths.
