In a significant shift for the James Bond franchise, Amazon MGM announced that it will assume creative control of the iconic series, marking the end of decades of oversight by the Broccoli family. This development was revealed on February 20, 2025, as longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli confirmed that they would be stepping back from their roles.
Amazon MGM, which acquired MGM Studios in 2022 for $6.5 billion largely to gain control over the Bond franchise, has formed a joint venture with Wilson and Broccoli. While the Broccolis will retain co-ownership of the James Bond intellectual property rights, Amazon MGM will lead the creative direction moving forward.
Wilson, reflecting on his nearly 60-year career with Bond, expressed a desire to focus on artistic and charitable endeavors, indicating that the time was right for Amazon MGM to guide the franchise into its future. The financial specifics of this new arrangement remain undisclosed, but it is expected to finalize within the year.
The change comes after reported disagreements between Amazon MGM and the Broccolis regarding the direction of the franchise following the conclusion of Daniel Craig's tenure as Bond in 2021's “No Time to Die.” This transition represents a historic moment, as it is the first time in over 50 years that a Broccoli will not be directly involved in approving a new Bond film.
Amazon MGM also has plans to expand the franchise beyond traditional film formats, aiming to broaden its reach and appeal. Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, acknowledged the legacy of the Broccoli family and expressed a commitment to honoring the franchise's heritage while looking forward to its next chapter.
