AI rendered Val Kilmer will appear after his death for a new film

A year after Val Kilmer's passing, a generative AI version of the actor will co-star in an independent film titled “As Deep as the Grave.” First Line Films announced that Kilmer had initially signed on for the role before his health prevented him from participating. His estate has approved the digital replication, and they are receiving compensation for its use.

Kilmer's daughter, Mercedes, expressed that the project reflects her father's optimistic view of emerging technologies as tools to enhance storytelling. Kilmer, who passed away from pneumonia at the age of 65, had faced significant health challenges following a throat cancer diagnosis in 2014, which led to the loss of his natural speaking voice. In his last film, “Top Gun: Maverick,” his voice was digitally altered using AI technology.

The integration of AI in filmmaking has raised various ethical concerns within Hollywood. The actors' union, SAG-AFTRA, has voiced opposition to certain AI-generated performances, emphasizing the importance of obtaining consent from performers or their representatives. In this case, the filmmakers assert that they adhered to these guidelines, stating their intent to set an ethical precedent for similar future projects.

“As Deep as the Grave,” previously known as “Canyon of the Dead,” has been in postproduction for several years. It is based on the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris and features a cast that includes Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi, and Abigail Breslin. The filmmakers are currently seeking distribution, aiming for a release later this year. Co-director Coerte Voorhees noted that Kilmer had a personal connection to the character, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with his family.
