At the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, the German remake of anti-war classic All Quiet on the Western Front won Best Picture, following success in other key categories. The Netflix drama had led BAFTA nominations with 14 and also won for Adapted Screenplay, Film Not in the English Language, Director for Edward Berger, Cinematography, Sound and Original Score. It beat The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once and Tár in the Best Picture category. Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin was also a major winner, taking Outstanding British Film, Original Screenplay and both Supporting Acting categories for Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan. Austin Butler won Best Actor for Elvis, while Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for Tár. Navalny, about jailed Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, won the Documentary category, and Sandy Powell became the first costume designer to receive the BAFTA Fellowship. Finally, a tribute was made to the late Queen Elizabeth, with actress Helen Mirren, who won both a BAFTA and an Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth in The Queen, leading the segment.
