Pregnant Women With Covid-19 Have 8x Higher Risk of Death

A recent study conducted by researchers from the BMJ Global Health journal has shed light on the risk of complications for pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2 virus. The research analysed data from 12 studies across the world, and found that pregnant women infected with the virus are 4 times more likely to be admitted to the ICU, 15 times more likely to need ventilator support and 23 times more likely to suffer from pneumonia. The risk of adverse outcomes for the infant was also found to be increased, with babies born to mothers with Covid-19 infections being 2 times more likely to be admitted to the neonatal care unit, almost 3 times more likely to be born prematurely and 19% more likely to have a low birth weight.

The CDC has identified certain factors that increase the risk of complications for pregnant women with Covid-19 infections, such as underlying medical conditions and belonging to racial and ethnic minority groups. To reduce the risk of contracting the virus, pregnant women are advised to opt for telemedicine consultations, wear well-fitted N95 masks, and avoid poorly ventilated indoor spaces and crowds.
