Older Americans Still Affected by Pandemic

The Covid pandemic has had a devastating effect on seniors, with the majority of Covid-related deaths occurring in those over 65 and the overwhelming majority of deaths in January 2021 being among those 65-85 and over 85. As a result, measures which had been put in place to protect the elderly, such as vaccination and masking, are no longer in place. This has left seniors largely to fend for themselves, creating an atmosphere of fear, isolation, and depression for many. Although some have been able to resume their normal activities, others remain unable to take part in events such as concerts and theater performances due to the risk of infection.

Policymakers and organizations have the ability to take measures to protect the elderly, such as renewed vaccination campaigns, mobile clinics, and home visits, as well as implementing masks-required hours in public spaces. It is important that society continue to recognize and acknowledge the risk faced by the elderly, and take steps to protect them. While the Covid pandemic has caused great loss and suffering among seniors, there are measures that can be taken to help protect them and reduce the risk of further infections and deaths.
