Uber introduces robot food delivery service on the East Coast

Uber has begun deploying autonomous delivery robots in Jersey City, New Jersey, marking the first introduction of this technology on the East Coast. This initiative is part of a strategic partnership with Avride, which was established in 2024. Previously, these robots were tested in Austin and Dallas, reflecting the growing trend in the food delivery industry towards automation.

Starting this week, customers using Uber Eats in Jersey City can opt for their orders to be delivered by Avride's robots or by traditional couriers. The robot deliveries will be available in downtown Jersey City from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with plans for future expansion in the area.

Uber's collaboration with Avride aligns with its broader strategy to integrate autonomous technology into its services. In 2020, the company sold its own autonomous vehicle research division and redirected its approach by forming partnerships with various companies specializing in self-driving technology. Currently, Uber collaborates with over a dozen partners, including Volvo, Waymo, and Aurora, to enhance its delivery and taxi services.

The Avride robots can travel at speeds of up to 5 mph and cover distances of 31 miles on a single charge, operating effectively in various weather conditions. As Uber continues to scale its autonomous delivery programs, it has now established services in 11 cities through its partnerships.

In addition to the delivery robots, Uber is working with Waymo to expand autonomous ridesharing services in cities like Phoenix and plans to introduce similar services in Austin and Atlanta in the near future. With these advancements, Uber aims to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving landscape of autonomous technology and food delivery services.
