Trumps launch cryptocurrencies before inauguration

Melania Trump and Donald Trump have both recently launched their own cryptocurrencies, raising ethical concerns within the crypto industry. Melania's coin, $MELANIA, was launched on the eve of her husband's presidential inauguration, just one day after Donald's own coin, $TRUMP, was released.

The $TRUMP coin quickly soared to nearly $11 billion US in market value, potentially inflating the president's net worth by billions. On the other hand, $MELANIA had a market value of $1.7 billion shortly before the inauguration. Roughly 80% of the $TRUMP tokens are owned by CIC Digital, an affiliate of Trump's business, and another entity called Fight, Fight, Fight, according to its website.

The launch of these coins has sparked criticism from some in the cryptocurrency industry, with concerns being raised about public figures wielding influence in speculative markets. Justin D'Anethan, an independent crypto analyst based in Hong Kong, highlighted the ethical and regulatory questions raised by the Trumps' involvement in the crypto space.

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci also criticized the move, stating that it allows anyone in the world to deposit money into the bank account of the President of the United States with just a few clicks, opening the door to potential conflicts of interest.

Despite previous skepticism, Donald Trump has become an enthusiastic supporter of cryptocurrencies, with plans to appoint a crypto czar and classify cryptocurrency as a "national priority" through an executive order after his inauguration. The president-elect has received support from various crypto companies and has accepted crypto donations for his campaign.

The Trumps' involvement in the crypto market has drawn attention from both supporters and critics, with many questioning the ethical implications of public figures profiting from their positions of power. As the crypto industry continues to evolve, the intersection of politics and digital assets raises important considerations for regulators and industry stakeholders alike.
