Trump warns of 100% tariff if Canada signs deal with China

President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Canada concerning its trade negotiations with China. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that if Canada finalizes a trade deal with China, it would face a 100% tariff on all goods exported to the United States. He expressed concerns that China might attempt to utilize Canada as a means to bypass U.S. tariffs.

This warning follows a recent announcement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who indicated that Canada and China had reached a preliminary agreement aimed at reducing trade barriers and lowering tariffs. The proposed deal includes China lowering tariffs on certain Canadian agricultural products and Canada increasing import quotas for Chinese electric vehicles, which would be subject to a favored tariff rate of 6.1%.

Interestingly, just a week prior, Trump had voiced support for Carney's efforts to secure a trade agreement with China, suggesting that it was a positive step for Canada. The shift in Trump's stance has raised questions about the future of U.S.-Canada relations and the impact of international trade agreements.

The White House and Canadian officials have not yet responded to requests for comments on Trump's latest statements. This tariff threat comes on the heels of Trump's decision to withdraw Carney’s invitation to join his "Board of Peace," reflecting a growing rift between the two leaders, particularly after Carney's remarks at the World Economic Forum about resisting economic coercion.

This development occurs against the backdrop of ongoing U.S. tariffs on various Canadian exports, including steel and certain automotive products, which have been part of the broader trade dynamics under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
