Trump criticizes tariff opponents and pledges $2,000 payments to Americans

President Donald Trump expressed strong support for tariffs, labeling opponents as "fools." In a post on Truth Social, he indicated plans to utilize revenue generated from these tariffs to provide a $2,000 dividend to American citizens, excluding high-income individuals. Trump claimed that the United States is currently experiencing economic prosperity, citing low inflation and a record stock market.

According to the Treasury Department, total tariff revenue for fiscal year 2025 reached $215.2 billion, reflecting a significant increase in revenue from previous months. Trump attributed this growth to his economic policies, asserting that these measures have led to substantial investments in manufacturing.

As the U.S. grapples with a national debt exceeding $38 trillion, Trump stated that his administration's economic strategies would contribute to debt reduction. Recent data shows a continuous rise in tariff revenues, with collections for fiscal year 2026 already totaling $35.9 billion since October 1, 2025.

Trump's comments come amid ongoing legal challenges regarding his trade policies. The Supreme Court recently began examining whether he possesses the authority to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and if such actions align with constitutional guidelines. A federal appeals court previously ruled that Trump may have exceeded his authority in implementing these tariffs, asserting that such powers rest with Congress.

The White House has defended Trump’s tariff strategy as a legitimate exercise of presidential authority aimed at safeguarding the economy. A spokesperson expressed optimism regarding the Supreme Court's impending decision on this matter, framing it as a critical moment for the U.S. trade agenda.
