Trump calls for Fed chair Powell's resignation and rate cuts

During a recent Cabinet meeting, President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, urging him to resign so he can appoint a new chair who would lower interest rates. Trump has consistently advocated for lower rates and has expressed dissatisfaction with Powell's performance, referring to him as "Too Late" and suggesting that he has misled Congress regarding a significant renovation project at the Federal Reserve's headquarters.

Trump's comments were prompted by allegations from some of his allies that Powell was not truthful during his congressional testimony about the renovation, which has seen costs escalate from an initial estimate of $1.9 billion in 2019 to nearly $2.5 billion due to rising construction material prices. Senator Tim Scott, during a Senate Banking Committee hearing, criticized the project, likening it to lavish renovations more suited for a palace than a public institution.

Powell defended the renovation in his testimony, stating that he takes public financial stewardship seriously and emphasized that many media reports regarding the project were misleading. He clarified that the renovations were necessary due to safety issues in the historic buildings and refuted claims of extravagant features, asserting that the project was being conducted responsibly.

Despite Trump's criticisms and threats to fire Powell, the Federal Reserve operates as an independent agency, and the president has limited legal authority to remove its chair unless for cause. The ongoing debate surrounding Powell's leadership and the Fed's renovation project highlights the tensions between the executive branch and the central bank's mandate for independence in monetary policy.
