Trump administration has 18 trade proposals

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt provided updates regarding the Trump administration's trade initiatives. During a press briefing, she highlighted that the administration has received "18 proposals on paper" for trade deals, which have been put forth by various countries. Leavitt emphasized that there are ongoing discussions involving the administration's trade team, which comprises key officials including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett.

Leavitt noted that the team is engaged in meetings with representatives from 34 countries this week alone, aiming to advance trade negotiations that she described as proceeding at a rapid pace. The administration is focusing on creating agreements that would benefit American workers and the economy.

Additionally, Leavitt mentioned that the administration is working towards a potential trade deal with China. She relayed President Trump’s message that negotiations are progressing positively, despite tariffs that have been a point of contention between the two nations. Treasury Secretary Bessent, speaking at an investor summit, expressed optimism that the current tariff impasse with China would eventually de-escalate, indicating that it is unsustainable for both economies.

While no formal negotiations with China have commenced, Bessent suggested that a trade agreement is feasible, citing a mutual desire among involved parties for resolution. Leavitt concluded by affirming that the administration is committed to fostering conditions conducive to achieving these trade deals.
