Taco Bell introduces AI 'coach' after significant investment in digital technology

Taco Bell, a subsidiary of Yum Brands, recently held its annual Live Más LIVE event in New York City, where executives announced a significant investment of $1 billion in digital and technological advancements. The company introduced its "Byte by Yum" artificial intelligence (AI) tools, aimed at enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency across its brands, including KFC and Pizza Hut.

During the event, Chief Operating Officer Jason Kidd showcased a video skit demonstrating the functionality of the AI assistant, referred to as the Byte AI Restaurant Coach. The skit featured a restaurant manager interacting with the AI character, which provided operational assistance, such as managing employee schedules and drive-thru orders. As of now, approximately 500 Taco Bell locations in the United States have implemented AI voice technology to facilitate drive-thru orders, a significant increase from around 100 locations reported in July 2024.

Yum Brands stated that its AI tools, which include various functionalities for online ordering, point of sale, kitchen optimization, and labor management, are designed to improve consistency and efficiency across its global restaurant operations. The company reported that 25,000 restaurants worldwide are currently utilizing at least one product from the Byte by Yum suite.

Taco Bell's performance has been strong, with projections indicating an 8% increase in same-store sales for the first quarter of 2025, attributed to new product offerings that have contributed to increased customer traffic. The advancements in AI and technology are part of Taco Bell's strategy to sustain its growth and enhance operational capabilities in a competitive fast-food market.
