Shopify CEO says staff must show AI can't handle their tasks before hiring

Tobias Lütke, CEO of Shopify, recently announced a significant shift in the company's hiring strategy, emphasizing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into daily operations. In a memo shared with employees, Lütke stated that before requesting additional staff or resources, employees must demonstrate why they cannot accomplish their tasks using AI tools. He encouraged employees to consider how their work could evolve with the inclusion of autonomous AI agents, suggesting that such thought processes could lead to innovative projects.

Lütke highlighted the productivity benefits of AI, describing it as a "multiplier" for those who utilize it effectively. He noted that employees have tackled challenging tasks with remarkable success through AI, achieving outputs that were previously deemed impossible. As part of this new approach, Shopify will also incorporate AI usage into employee performance evaluations.

This directive aligns with broader trends in the technology sector, where companies are investing heavily in AI development while simultaneously re-evaluating their workforce needs. In 2024, approximately 152,000 positions were eliminated across various tech firms. Shopify's workforce has seen reductions in recent years, with a total headcount dropping from 8,300 to 8,100 by the end of December 2024, following significant layoffs in 2022 and 2023.

At a recent Morgan Stanley investor event, Shopify’s CFO, Jeff Hoffmeister, indicated that while headcount may remain stable, employee-related costs could fluctuate based on the hiring of higher-compensated AI specialists. The ongoing evolution of AI capabilities is expected to influence workforce dynamics and operational strategies in the coming years.
