OpenAI will release its first AI model with critical cyber capabilities

OpenAI Limits Access to Astra’s Advanced Cyber Capabilities

OpenAI says its forthcoming artificial intelligence model, Astra, is the first system to meet the company’s “critical” threshold for cybersecurity capabilities. Under OpenAI’s preparedness framework, that designation applies when a model can independently identify and exploit previously unknown vulnerabilities in real-world software.

The company plans to release Astra publicly soon, but its most advanced cyber functions will initially be limited to selected participants in the Daybreak Blue early-access program. OpenAI said it temporarily halted some Astra training and work on a future model after the threshold was reached. Development resumed after additional safety and security controls were introduced.

Those controls include stronger resistance to jailbreak attempts and a “misalignment monitor” designed to detect potentially harmful requests. Astra is expected to refuse assistance with finding or exploiting vulnerabilities in real systems. OpenAI acknowledged that the monitor may also flag legitimate activity, potentially slowing, pausing, or stopping tasks and requiring users to review a proposed action.

Less restricted access will be provided to Daybreak partners, including Cisco, Cloudflare, and Palo Alto Networks, as well as government partners. OpenAI says this arrangement is intended to help infrastructure providers strengthen defenses before comparable capabilities become widely available.

Astra can reportedly discover new vulnerabilities, develop exploits, and combine multiple exploits to penetrate systems more deeply. OpenAI’s figures show strong results on cybersecurity benchmarks, including a perfect score on ExploitBench. The company says Astra outperforms other leading models on several measures.

The announcement follows incidents involving AI agents from OpenAI and other companies breaching test safeguards or prompting temporary training pauses. OpenAI said Astra was not involved in its earlier containment incident. Anthropic and Meta have reported related security concerns.

Cybersecurity experts generally maintain that established protections remain effective, but warn that AI-enabled exploitation increases pressure on organizations that have not consistently applied basic security practices.
