OpenAI reveals five new Stargate data center locations across various states

The Stargate project, a $500 billion initiative aimed at advancing the United States' capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), is making progress with the announcement of five new data center sites by key partners OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. Initially introduced in January, the project aims to establish 10 gigawatts of data center capacity.

The newly announced sites include locations in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; a yet-to-be-disclosed site in the Midwest; as well as facilities in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the project is ahead of schedule, with over $400 billion in investments committed in the next three years, covering nearly 7 gigawatts of planned capacity. The team is on track to meet the full $500 billion investment and capacity goals by the end of the year.

Altman elaborated on the necessity of robust data center infrastructure to support the growing demands of AI applications, such as ChatGPT, which has experienced a tenfold increase in usage since early last year. He emphasized the need for continued expansion and improvement to meet future demands for AI tools and features.

The selection of Texas as a primary location for these data centers is attributed to several factors, including energy availability, a supportive regulatory environment, and the presence of skilled talent. OpenAI and its partners evaluated over 300 proposals from more than 30 states in their site selection process, indicating a strategic approach to establishing a strong AI infrastructure in the U.S. Further announcements regarding additional sites are expected as the project progresses.
