OpenAI launches Operator for automating tasks like vacation planning and reservations

OpenAI has introduced a new feature for its ChatGPT chatbot, named Operator, which is designed to automate various tasks for users. This tool allows users to delegate activities such as vacation planning, form filling, restaurant reservations, and grocery ordering to the AI. According to OpenAI, Operator functions as an agent that can navigate the web, interact with various digital interfaces, and personalize its actions based on user input.

Currently, Operator is available exclusively to ChatGPT Pro users in the United States and can be accessed through Operator.ChatGPT.com. OpenAI plans to extend availability to additional user tiers, including Plus, Team, and Enterprise, and aims to integrate Operator into the broader ChatGPT framework. The company acknowledges that Operator may face challenges with certain tasks, such as calendar management and slideshow creation.

OpenAI's announcement comes amidst a competitive landscape in the generative AI sector, where it faces rivals like Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI executives. Anthropic recently launched its own AI capabilities allowing agents to perform complex tasks on computers, which they claim can mimic human interaction with various software applications.

The generative AI market is projected to exceed $1 trillion in revenue over the next decade, reflecting significant growth and investment interest in this technology. Notably, Google has recently committed over $1 billion to Anthropic amid ongoing capital-raising efforts by the startup.

As OpenAI continues to develop its technology with aspirations towards achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), experts remain divided on the feasibility and timeline for reaching this benchmark.
