OpenAI launches ChatGPT Atlas browser, causing Alphabet stock to drop

OpenAI has unveiled its latest product, ChatGPT Atlas, an artificial intelligence-powered web browser designed to enhance user experience. The announcement was made by CEO Sam Altman during a livestream event on July 8, 2025, at the Allen & Co. Sun Valley Conference. Atlas aims to integrate OpenAI's generative chatbot, ChatGPT, into the browsing experience, allowing users to create summaries, ask questions, and complete various tasks while navigating the web.

Altman emphasized that AI presents a unique opportunity to redefine the capabilities of web browsers. Atlas features an "Ask ChatGPT" button on the corner of each webpage, which opens a sidebar for users to interact with the chatbot without needing to switch tabs. This functionality is intended to streamline the browsing process by reducing the need for copying and pasting information.

The browser also incorporates a memory feature, enabling it to learn user preferences over time. For example, users can search their web history by prompting the browser for specific documents. Additionally, Atlas includes an agent mode, allowing ChatGPT to perform tasks on behalf of the user, such as making reservations or editing documents.

The browser is currently available for macOS users globally, with plans to expand to Windows, iOS, and Android platforms in the near future. However, the agent mode feature is limited to Plus and Pro subscribers. Following the announcement, shares of Alphabet, Google's parent company, experienced a decline of approximately 3%. OpenAI's entry into the browser market positions it against competitors like Google and Perplexity AI, both of which have introduced their own AI-integrated browsing solutions.
