OpenAI announced that it has reached 3 million paying business users, a notable increase from 2 million reported in February. This growth is attributed to the popularity of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, which gained significant attention in late 2022 and has since expanded into workplace-specific applications.
The 3 million users include various tiers of ChatGPT services such as ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Team, and ChatGPT Edu. OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, emphasized the strong correlation between the consumer uptake of ChatGPT and its integration into business environments. Currently, the company supports 500 million weekly active users.
Financially, OpenAI is projected to generate $12.7 billion in revenue this year, a significant shift from previous estimates that indicated a potential annual loss of $5 billion. The organization is witnessing increased adoption of its tools across diverse sectors, including regulated industries like finance and healthcare, with notable clients such as Lowe's, Morgan Stanley, and Uber.
Additionally, OpenAI introduced new features for its business offerings, including "connectors" that allow users to integrate data from third-party platforms like Google Drive and Dropbox directly within ChatGPT. Another feature, "record mode," enables users to record and transcribe meetings, with initial availability in audio format. This feature is designed to facilitate follow-up actions and integrates with internal documents, and it is being rolled out to various user tiers.
Lightcap indicated that OpenAI is onboarding nine new enterprises weekly, reflecting a growing recognition of AI's role in contemporary business workflows. The company's efforts aim to enhance productivity and streamline operations for its users.
