OpenAI has introduced a new feature called "Agent Mode" for ChatGPT users, which was officially announced on Thursday. This tool enables users to execute complex tasks, such as parsing data and generating spreadsheets and slides, by leveraging ChatGPT's capabilities to operate autonomously on its own computer.
During a livestream, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman elaborated on the development, stating that the idea stemmed from earlier projects like the Operator and Deep Research agents. The Operator can perform tasks using its own browser, while Deep Research is designed for multi-step investigations. Altman indicated that user feedback highlighted a desire for a unified agent that could seamlessly integrate these functionalities.
Agent Mode is currently accessible to Pro, Plus, and Team users of ChatGPT. By selecting "agent mode" from the tools dropdown menu, these users can activate the feature within any conversation.
The launch of Agent Mode comes at a time when OpenAI is facing increased competition from major tech companies, including Google, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft. This summer has been particularly challenging for OpenAI, which has seen shifts in its workforce and ongoing disputes with its primary investor, Microsoft, as well as legal issues surrounding a recent acquisition.
Despite these challenges, the introduction of Agent Mode serves as a strategic move for OpenAI to reaffirm its position in the competitive AI landscape, particularly against rivals like Microsoft and Google.
