New TikTok deal with China secures US control of algorithm

The White House has announced progress on a deal concerning TikTok, the popular social video platform, that aims to address concerns over the app's data security and algorithm control. Under the proposed agreement, U.S. companies will oversee TikTok’s algorithm, which dictates what content users see, and an American-led board will hold a majority of seats overseeing the app's U.S. operations. This move follows ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China, particularly regarding the platform's Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

Legislation passed by Congress calls for a TikTok ban to take effect in January, but prior executive orders from President Donald Trump have allowed the app to continue operating while negotiations are underway. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that technology firm Oracle will manage TikTok’s data and security, ensuring that American interests are prioritized. She also noted that six out of seven board members would be American.

President Trump recently discussed the TikTok deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing Xi as cooperative throughout the negotiations. While the specifics of algorithm control remain somewhat unclear, Trump expressed optimism about reaching an agreement that would enhance U.S. control.

Public opinion on TikTok has shown fluctuation, with a recent Pew Research survey indicating that support for a ban has decreased from 50% in March 2023 to about one-third. Concerns over data security remain a significant factor for those in favor of restricting the platform.

Leavitt concluded that the finalization of the deal is imminent, with expectations for it to be signed in the coming days as negotiations continue between U.S. and Chinese officials.
