On his 54th birthday, Elon Musk publicly criticized the latest Senate draft of President Donald Trump’s proposed spending bill, labeling it as potentially detrimental to the American job market and economy. Musk expressed his concerns in a post on X, stating that the bill could "destroy millions of jobs" and impose new taxes on wind and solar projects that have not yet begun construction. He referred to the draft as "utterly insane and destructive," reflecting an ongoing disagreement with Trump regarding the spending bill's implications.
This criticism follows Musk's earlier condemnation of an initial version of the bill, which he described as a "massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill." In both instances, Musk emphasized the negative impact that cuts to renewable energy incentives could have on future industries, arguing that the bill favors outdated sectors at the expense of emerging ones.
The Senate's revised bill, introduced by Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham, seeks to limit tax credits to projects that start production before 2028 and introduces new taxes on later initiatives. These changes have drawn criticism from various stakeholders, including the American Clean Power Association, which warned that increased taxes could hinder energy investments, elevate household energy costs, and negatively affect rural communities that stand to benefit from clean energy initiatives.
Democratic senators, including Elizabeth Warren, have also expressed opposition to the bill, with Warren advocating for a full reading of the nearly 1,000-page document to ensure thorough scrutiny. While Musk's comments have sparked debate, Senate Republicans continue to push for the bill’s passage by the upcoming July 4th deadline. The White House has yet to respond to these developments.
