Millions risk losing Medicaid in spring

The Covid pandemic has resulted in a surge in Medicaid enrollment, with the total number of enrollees now at over 83 million. In response to the pandemic, states have been prevented from disenrolling people from Medicaid, but this protection may end in April 2023. According to the Health and Human Services Department, this could lead to 15 million people losing their Medicaid coverage, 6.8 million of whom remain eligible for it.

The legislation requires states to make a good faith effort to contact individuals whose eligibility is under review, however Republican governors have called for the Biden administration to end the Covid public health emergency in April. The Kaiser Family Foundation has found that states have spent more in coverage than they received in federal funds.

This situation highlights the importance of understanding and staying up to date with your healthcare coverage, as it could be at risk of changing in the future. It is also important to be aware of the resources available to you, such as the Health and Human Services Department, if you are unsure of your eligibility for Medicaid.
