Brad Smith, the Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, made an appearance at the Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal on November 12, 2024. The conference, which boasts 71,528 attendees from 153 countries and 3,050 companies, highlighted AI as the most represented industry this year. Microsoft has announced plans to invest $80 billion in fiscal 2025 to develop data centers capable of handling AI workloads, with over half of this spending set to take place in the United States.
Smith emphasized the importance of American companies and private capital in leading the global AI race, citing partnerships with firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, as well as Microsoft's own AI-enabled software platforms and applications. The company's collaboration with OpenAI, which has received over $13 billion in investments, has led to the integration of AI models into various Microsoft products.
Microsoft reported significant capital expenditures in the first quarter of fiscal 2025, with a focus on property and equipment. The company's revenue from Azure and other cloud services, including AI services, saw a 33% year-over-year growth, with AI contributing 12 percentage points to this increase.
Smith also urged the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump to prioritize education and the promotion of U.S. AI technologies to maintain the country's leadership in the field. He warned of China's efforts to establish dominance in AI through initiatives like subsidized access to chips and the construction of AI data centers in developing countries.
In response, Smith advocated for the promotion of American AI as a superior alternative and emphasized the need for the United States to act swiftly and effectively to secure its position in the global AI race. Microsoft's substantial investment in AI infrastructure reflects the company's commitment to advancing AI technologies and maintaining its competitive edge in the industry.
