Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced plans to reduce its workforce, with a focus on removing the lowest performers. In an internal memo sent to employees, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the company will be implementing more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle, aiming to reach 10% non-regrettable attrition by the end of the current performance cycle.
The decision to part ways with the lowest-performing 5% of its workforce comes as Meta aims to ensure it hires the most talented individuals. Employees affected by the cutbacks will receive generous severance packages from the company. Meta also plans to hire new employees to fill the roles vacated through performance-oriented attrition.
This move by Meta follows a series of workforce cutbacks in recent years. In 2022, the company restructured its workforce, resulting in a reduction of about 11,000 jobs. The following year, dubbed the "Year of Efficiency" by Zuckerberg, Meta eliminated around 10,000 roles at the company.
Additionally, Zuckerberg recently announced the end of Meta's fact-checking service and a shift towards a community notes-like system, similar to what Elon Musk implemented at X, formerly Twitter.
It is important to note that Meta has faced criticism and controversy in the past regarding its workforce management and policies. However, Zuckerberg emphasized the company's commitment to hiring the most talented individuals and maintaining efficiency within the organization.
As Meta continues to make changes to its workforce and operations, it remains to be seen how these decisions will impact the company's future direction and success.
