Klarna CEO states AI could impact white-collar jobs and cause recession

Sebastian Siemiatkowski, CEO of the Swedish payments company Klarna, has expressed concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the job market and the economy. Speaking on The Times Tech podcast, he warned that the increasing adoption of AI could lead to significant job cuts in white-collar sectors, potentially triggering a recession. Siemiatkowski emphasized that while AI has contributed to operational efficiency at Klarna—where the workforce has been reduced from 5,500 to 3,000 in two years—its implications for employment are serious and cannot be overlooked.

Klarna's AI assistant has reportedly replaced the work of 700 full-time customer service agents, highlighting the technology's capability to perform tasks traditionally handled by humans. Siemiatkowski has previously noted that AI could effectively carry out most human jobs, leading to a hiring freeze at Klarna since 2023 as the company adapted to these changes. However, he later acknowledged that the push for AI-driven cost-cutting may have been excessive, indicating a shift in Klarna’s approach towards a balanced integration of human and AI support.

Siemiatkowski's remarks align with broader discussions in the tech industry regarding the potential job displacement caused by AI. Leaders from companies like Anthropic have similarly raised alarms about the technology's capacity to eliminate a significant portion of entry-level positions. Despite these challenges, some experts advocate that AI could also enhance job quality, allowing humans to focus on more strategic and creative tasks.

As the dialogue around AI's role in the workforce continues, Siemiatkowski advocates for transparency about the technology's impact, encouraging society to prepare for its consequences.
