GPT-5 launched by OpenAI offering PhD level assistance on demand

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, which the organization describes as a significant enhancement over previous models. CEO Sam Altman characterized it as akin to having a team of PhD-level experts readily available. He also indicated that this development may represent a pivotal move towards achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), which aims to replicate human cognitive abilities.

The new model, according to Nick Turley, head of the ChatGPT team, is noted for its improved speed and intelligence, featuring a more natural, human-like conversational style. In addition, Michelle Pokrass, who leads post-training efforts for ChatGPT, stated that GPT-5 is the premier coding tool for developers. A standout feature is "vibecoding," allowing users to generate applications simply by requesting GPT-5 to code them, along with the ability to produce diverse responses to identical queries.

GPT-5 will be accessible to all current ChatGPT users at no additional cost, although usage limitations will apply to those on unpaid or lower-tier subscriptions. OpenAI has emphasized the safety features integrated into GPT-5, with Safety Research Lead Alex Beutel asserting that the model was developed with enhanced safety measures and underwent comprehensive testing to mitigate risks of misuse.

This announcement follows news that the federal government is adopting ChatGPT across its various agencies, coinciding with statements from President Donald Trump about the U.S. commitment to leading the AI sector. Trump remarked on the nation’s historical role in the AI field and its intention to maintain that leadership.
