Google plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic

Google has announced plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, a significant player in the artificial intelligence sector. The deal was confirmed on Friday, with an initial investment of $10 billion based on Anthropic's recent valuation of $380 billion. The remaining $30 billion is contingent upon the achievement of certain performance milestones.

This agreement extends an existing partnership between Google and Anthropic, which dates back to 2023, when Google first invested $300 million for a 10% stake. Since then, Google’s total investment has surpassed $3 billion, increasing its stake to approximately 14%.

Anthropic has recently secured additional computing resources, including 5 gigawatts of capacity from Google and Broadcom, expected to come online next year. This expansion aims to meet the growing demand for Anthropic's AI models, particularly its Claude series. The company has reported annualized revenues exceeding $30 billion, driven by increasing enterprise and consumer demand.

The investment comes amid escalating competition among tech giants in AI development, with both Google and Amazon making substantial commitments to Anthropic. Amazon has invested $5 billion and has plans for up to $20 billion in future contributions linked to commercial milestones.

Google also competes in the AI landscape with its Gemini models and provides Anthropic's Claude models through its cloud services. The increasing investment in AI infrastructure reflects a broader trend, as major tech firms allocate significant resources to secure leadership in the rapidly evolving AI market.
