Google is acquiring startup Wiz for $32 billion

Google has announced its agreement to acquire the cloud cybersecurity startup Wiz for $32 billion in cash, pending standard closing adjustments. This acquisition follows a previous bid of $23 billion that Wiz rejected last year, citing concerns over antitrust issues and a focus on pursuing an initial public offering.

Once finalized, expected in 2026, Wiz will operate under Google Cloud. Google aims to enhance its cloud services by integrating Wiz's AI-powered cybersecurity solutions, which are designed to mitigate critical risks for businesses and government entities using cloud infrastructure. Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the growing demand for robust security solutions and increased options for cloud computing providers.

Wiz, which was valued at $12 billion last year, has established partnerships with multiple cloud platforms, including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. The startup serves a range of clients, including Morgan Stanley, BMW, and LVMH. Following the acquisition, Wiz plans to continue offering its services across various cloud environments.

Wiz co-founder and CEO Assaf Rappaport expressed optimism regarding the merger, stating it would accelerate innovation at a pace unattainable as an independent entity. Google’s acquisition of Wiz is part of a broader trend in which the tech giant has been increasing its investments in cybersecurity, having previously acquired Mandiant for $5.4 billion.

Google Cloud already offers a suite of security tools, including Google Threat Intelligence and the Security Operations Center. With this latest acquisition, Google aims to strengthen its position in the competitive cybersecurity landscape, particularly as the demand for cloud security solutions continues to rise amid the growing prevalence of generative AI technologies.
