GM recalls over 90,000 vehicles due to transmission problem

General Motors (GM) has announced a recall affecting over 90,000 vehicles due to a potential transmission issue that may increase the risk of crashes. The recall specifically targets certain models equipped with a 10-speed transmission. These models include the 2020-2021 Cadillac CT4 and CT5, as well as the 2019-2020 Cadillac CT6 and the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Camaro.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the transmission control valve in these vehicles may experience "excess wear," potentially leading to "harsh shifting" and, in rare cases, a momentary wheel lock-up while the vehicle is in motion. GM has reported one incident that may be associated with this defect.

To address the issue, GM plans to implement a software update designed to detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a potential wheel lock-up could occur. This update will temporarily place the transmission into fifth gear until the next ignition cycle, thereby preventing a lock-up situation. The installation of this monitoring software will be provided to customers at no additional charge.

Owners of the affected vehicles are expected to receive notification letters starting April 21, 2025. GM emphasized that customer safety remains its highest priority and is working to resolve the matter expediently. Additionally, the latest production models have already incorporated new transmission control software to mitigate this risk.

This recall reflects GM's ongoing commitment to vehicle safety and highlights the importance of proactive measures in addressing potential defects.
