Fidelity announces its plan to offer SpaceX stock to more investors

Fidelity Eases Retail Access to Potential SpaceX IPO Shares

Fidelity customers may have a lower barrier to participating in a potential SpaceX initial public offering, according to information from the brokerage. The firm says eligible retail investors could seek access to SpaceX IPO shares with as little as $2,000 in a brokerage account, a significant reduction from past IPO requirements that could reach $500,000 in assets, depending on the offering.

The change is tied to SpaceX’s planned allocation of shares to retail investors. While companies typically reserve about 5% to 10% of IPO shares for retail buyers, SpaceX is expected to make up to 30% available at the IPO price. Fidelity said the larger retail allocation allowed it to lower its account minimum for this offering.

Eligible Fidelity customers can submit an indication of interest and request between one share and one million shares. However, access is not guaranteed. Fidelity and other brokerages are expected to use lottery systems because demand from retail investors is likely to exceed the available supply.

Fidelity also maintains rules discouraging quick resale of IPO shares. Investors who sell within the first 15 days of trading may face limits on participation in future offerings.

SpaceX has said retail investor participation is important to the company. The approach could give individual investors a greater chance to buy shares at the initial offering price, a stage that is often dominated by institutional investors.

Analysts have noted that increased retail involvement could contribute to volatility once trading begins. There are also concerns that investors could gain broad exposure to SpaceX if the stock is added quickly to major indexes, which would require index funds and ETFs to buy shares.

Some market observers have criticized accelerated index inclusion, arguing that it may favor IPO issuers and early investors. For now, Fidelity’s lower minimum marks a notable shift in retail access to high-profile public offerings.
