E-Commerce Retail Reaches $1 Trillion Milestone

Digital commerce has achieved a major milestone in the United States, with total spending surpassing the $1 trillion mark in a single year for the first time ever in 2022. Mobile devices were a major driver of growth, accounting for nearly 40% of the total digital commerce dollars spent. Five of the highest-grossing categories were grocery/baby/pet, apparel and accessories, computers and peripherals, consumer electronics, and furniture and appliances.

The holiday shopping season saw impressive growth as well, with Adobe estimating that total spending in November and December totaled $211.7 billion, and Comscore predicting that the full Q4 period will total $239 billion. Online grocery sales experienced massive growth over the past four years, with an increase of 333%.

Social commerce is also on the rise, with a 407% increase in views on U.S. retail and consumer packaged goods brands, and an increase in “actions” in consumer goods categories on TikTok. 86% of TikTok users also use — or at least visit — Amazon, showing the growing influence of social commerce in the retail ecosystem.

The growth of digital commerce is undeniable, and it is likely to continue to rise as more and more people turn to online shopping as their preferred way of buying goods and services.
