Costco denies union demands ahead of contract deadline

Costco has rejected a majority of the Teamsters' demands as the deadline to secure a new contract looms. The Teamsters announced that the company rejected 98% of the contract provisions they proposed, including language on seniority, inclement weather, paid family leave, bereavement policies, sick time, and safeguards against surveillance. The group rallied in California to protest the alleged unfair labor practices of the company and demand an industry-leading contract.

The Teamsters believe that Costco's rejection of their demands signals an "unwillingness to bargain in good faith" and an "aggressive anti-union stance." The deadline for the new contract is set for January 31st, and tensions are rising as negotiations continue.

Costco stated on their website that they are often noted for being more employee-focused than other Fortune 500 companies, offering fair wages and top-notch benefits. However, the Teamsters argue that the company, with net sales of $78.2 billion in fiscal year 2024, has prioritized corporate greed over workers and strayed from its once strong "pro-worker" reputation.

The union is demanding a contract that reflects Costco's massive profits and holds the company accountable for its claims of being "pro-worker." They have filed unfair labor charges against Costco for alleged harassment of union representatives and workers wearing union buttons, as well as other unfair labor practices.

Costco has yet to comment on the situation, and negotiations are ongoing. The Teamsters remain committed to good-faith negotiations but are prepared to fight for the contract that their members deserve if Costco does not take their demands seriously. The situation remains tense as the deadline approaches, with both sides standing firm in their positions.
