Recent findings from Consumer Reports have raised concerns about the safety of certain dark chocolate bars. In a study of 28 brands, all of the products tested contained lead and cadmium. Five of the brands that may have higher levels of heavy metals are Trader Joe's, Hershey's, Lindt, Godiva, and Dove.
Lead exposure, especially in children, can have serious impacts on their cognitive abilities, as well as cause weakness, anemia, kidney or brain damage. High levels of cadmium can cause stomach irritation and even cancer. In light of these findings, several lawsuits have been filed against a few of the brands, including Trader Joe's and Hershey's.
As dark chocolate bars are often recommended for their heart health benefits, consumers should take caution when choosing these products, as they may contain higher levels of lead and cadmium. It is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with heavy metal contamination and to take the necessary steps to protect your health.
